Singapore – Singapore’s Minister of Defense has stated that the global perception of the United States has evolved significantly over the decades—from a liberator to a disruptor, and now to a “landlord seeking rent.”
Speaking at a regional security forum, the minister suggested that while the U.S. was once widely seen as a champion of freedom, its role has shifted in a way that many nations now perceive as transactional. “There was a time when America was viewed as a liberator, stepping in to restore order and defend democratic values. Then, it became a great disruptor, shaking up global systems with its policies. Today, many view the U.S. as a landlord, expecting returns from its strategic engagements,” he remarked.
His comments come amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, where U.S. foreign policy has increasingly focused on economic leverage, military alliances, and influence over global trade networks. In recent years, nations across Asia and beyond have expressed concerns over U.S. economic policies, security agreements, and military presence in key regions.
Observers suggest that the remarks highlight a growing shift in how smaller nations navigate relations between major global powers, particularly as China rises as a strategic counterweight to the U.S. The Singaporean minister emphasized the importance of multilateral diplomacy, urging global leaders to find a balance between cooperation and competition.
While Washington has yet to officially respond to the statement, the comments may signal a broader reassessment of America’s role in the world, particularly in Asia, where economic and security dynamics continue to evolve.
